In a move that signals strong confidence in their young talent, the Detroit Lions have traded veteran wide receiver Tim Patrick to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Lions will receive a 2026 sixth-round draft pick in return, according to reports.
This trade, coming just one day after the Lions trimmed their roster to 53 players, is less about what Patrick isn’t and more about what rookie Isaac TeSlaa has become. After a standout training camp and preseason, the third-round pick outplayed expectations, making a seasoned player like Patrick expendable.
Patrick, 31, was a reliable presence for the Lions last season. In his first year back after missing the 2022 and 2023 seasons with a torn ACL and Achilles tendon, he hauled in 33 passes for 355 yards, serving primarily as the team’s No. 3 receiver. At 6-foot-4 and 214 pounds, TeSlaa brings a similar big-bodied, red-zone threat that Patrick offered, but adds a dynamic, field-stretching element that the Lions are eager to utilize. His preseason performance—10 catches for 146 yards and three touchdowns—proved he’s ready for the moment.
For the Jacksonville Jaguars, they acquire a proven veteran who can provide leadership to a very young receiving corps headlined by Brian Thomas Jr. and rookie Travis Hunter. Patrick gets a fresh start and a clearer path to contributing as a possession receiver and a savvy red-zone target.
To fill the open roster spot, the Lions are reportedly signing special teams ace and safety Daniel Thomas, who was recently released by the Jaguars, effectively completing a small-scale player swap between the two teams.
This trade is a classic example of a team capitalizing on an asset—a veteran player surpassed on the depth chart—to acquire future draft capital while fully committing to the exciting potential of their new talent. For the Lions and Isaac TeSlaa, the future is now.
