Former Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler has been sentenced to four days in jail and will lose his driver’s license after accepting a plea deal for a Driving Under the Influence (DUI) charge stemming from an October 2024 arrest.
Cutler, 42, appeared before a judge in Williamson County, Tennessee, on Tuesday, where he pleaded guilty to the DUI charge. As part of the agreement, additional charges, including possession of a handgun while under the influence, were dismissed.
The Details of the Sentence
According to court reports, the terms of Cutler’s plea deal are as follows:
- A four-day sentence in the Williamson County Jail, set to begin on September 29.
- A $350 fine.
- One year of unsupervised probation.
- Mandatory attendance in a DUI safety school.
- Revocation of his Tennessee driver’s license.
The sentence brings a resolution to a case that began last year when police were called to a collision in downtown Franklin.
The Incident That Led to Arrest
On October 17, 2024, officers from the Franklin Police Department responded to a minor rear-end collision on Bridge Street. Authorities reported that Cutler, driving a white Dodge Ram truck, struck the back of a blue GMC.
A press release from the police department stated that officers “noticed a strong odor of alcohol” on the former NFL star at the scene. The release further alleged that “Cutler was also slurring his words and had blood shot eyes.”
When asked to perform field sobriety tests, Cutler refused. Police subsequently obtained a warrant and took him to a local hospital for a blood draw. During a search of his vehicle, authorities located two firearms, including a loaded pistol in the center console.
Prior to his arrest, it was alleged that Cutler attempted to leave the scene and offered the driver of the other vehicle $2,000 not to contact the police.
A Look Back at a Storied NFL Career
The legal troubles mark a difficult postscript to what was a notable NFL career. Cutler was the 11th overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos out of Vanderbilt University.
He would go on to spend the majority of his 12-year career with the Chicago Bears, where he became the franchise’s all-time leader in passing yards (23,443) and touchdowns (154). He led the Bears to the NFC Championship game following the 2010 season. Cutler finished his career with the Miami Dolphins in 2017, retiring with over 35,000 passing yards and 230 touchdowns.
